About 2.5km after the start there is a low lying tree across the left of the river. In the past there has been a lot of carnage and a near drowning at this spot. The main reason for most of the trouble at this spot is that the boats are still bunched and the testosterone levels are still running high. At a low to medium level the water pushes you into this tree.
The easiest way to get past this obstacle is to be courteous to your fellow paddler and respect their line. Try and approach the obstacle river right and let other paddlers ahead of you go through 2 abreast.
SLIDING WEIR
Sliding weir is reached after about 16km. It is recognizable by the red cliffs on the right hand side. Sliding weir is preceded by a long pool which takes you past the Viljoensdrif wine farm. The line down sliding weir is either left or right.
BOLLARD BRIDGE
Bollard Bridge is about 400m below the low level bridges below sliding weir. Before you see the bridge you will go through a series of rapids. Steer your boat left of centre and as you come around the corner the bollard bridge will come into view. Move towards the left side.
SECUNDA WEIR
Once you pass under the high iron bridge you will drop into a pool which has a high cliff face on the left and some wooden cottages on the right.
JONKEER LOW LEVEL BRIDGE
NB: Pay attention to the race briefing regarding this obstacle
At the 31km mark you will reach the next major obstacle of the race. The Jonkeer low level bridge which in the past was referred to as the broken bridge (which is not broken). The lines differ depending on the water level.
